Life experiences13626587_1151104168266075_7506053499665795867_n are different for everyone. 10 years ago, I was living on welfare, and 15 years ago, I was even homeless. I can’t even imagine that I used to be in that place in my life. When I relive my childhood memories they are often filled with pain and torment, even the memories cause me to become wrought with emotion and my eyes well up with tears. When it all comes together and I look at where I am today, physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially, I know for absolute certain that had I not lived through that rough childhood I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I am so grateful that even though the journey was a tumultuous one, God has never left my side. God has positioned me for change — change in my personal lives and the lives of those near and dear to my heart, change in some people I don’t know at all, and change in our communities. We all have a story, a testimony of the goodness of God’s grace and mercy. But I do know that I have no intention of going back to where I was. And so I am going to work hard and put my best effort into what I do as a wife, a mother, and an entrepreneur.

Knowing your Brand

shutterstock_484711921This game called entrepreneurship is not easy; it’s going to be hard. Being confident that you will complete the job, supporting and encouraging yourself and your team, and providing excellent customer service, will give you endurance to run this race. When you get in your mind that you need to complete everything with a level of excellence, things will change, your confidence will change because you know you have provided the best by the best.

Understand that your product or service must be air tight, the best. You can’t say that you have the best sweet potato pie just because your family, friends and co-workers tell you. You must test your product/service with the public. Test it to people you don’t know and won’t won’t be biased in judging you. The honesty of others that you don’t know will allow you to create what your customers need, instead of just creating a product that you and your closest friends like. It will boost your confidence when you are providing your product to REAL customers and they in turn, love the product.

A part of understanding your brand is understanding your competitors. If you assume your firm will be the only game in town, or if you fail to take existing competitors seriously, you’re asking for trouble. Pay attention to the competition and you won’t be unpleasantly surprised. Also, your competitors can be a great source of information about what works and what doesn’t work. Understand your competition. Who’s their largest supporter in the community? Their complaints? Learn from their mistakes and success.

Why You Need to Study Your Clientele

The best way to start choosing your ideal clientele is by studying them and by looking where you are. In terms of your client roster, it’s important to ask yourself, “Who are my current clients?” Starting from where you are enables you to assess the quality of clients that you are currently serving.

The question: “Who are my current clients?” implies that you will have to do an explorative study of your client profile, which requires you to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is their vision-mission? Who are they and why do they exist?
  • What are their specific needs and concerns?
  • What do they do? What are their specific products and services?
  • What do they need from you? What services do they expect to get from you?
  • How is their business currently doing? How well are they marketing their services to their consumers?
  • Where is your client geographically located?
  • How do you and your client communicate?
  • How do they add value to your business?
  • Why did they choose you?

 

Once you’ve established your client profile and what type of business you are doing with them, the next step is to look at your current clients in terms of your relationship with them.

To identify the most obvious indicators of whether or not the relationship is healthy, you don’t have to go very far. Client behavior, at the outset, reflects how your client values your services. For example, if a client suddenly “disappears” after three weeks into the month when a payment is due during the last week is an indicator that there is something wrong.

If you have clients like this, or even clients that manipulate your working relationship just so that they can get the lowest rates or get away with not paying their dues on time, it’s time to re-evaluate if these are the clients you would want to service. You need to make a stand for your business as letting clients like these get away with treating you unfairly puts a dent on your integrity as an entrepreneur.
